It was unheard of for a woman to run anything other than a household, but the wagon repair company was the only one of its kind in Hayview, the small town Vera and her family knew and loved. In the early days Vera required the help of her father and Myron’s grandfather and with them she was able to keep the business up and running to support the farmhouse that was attached to the cottage.

Vera had decided to leave Myron’s room untouched, out of reverence and gratitude for her late husband. They had barely known each other and she always remembered him with fond memories of his generosity. They hadn’t needed to get married but they did regardless that he wouldn’t be there afterward. He wanted to protect her even though he never really got to know anything about her.

“You’re kind, “ he said after his second cup of coffee, that one morning on the front steps. Vera sat beside him,her red hair cascading down her shoulders. She held her long dress at her legs since the wind had picked up. “It’s very nice of you to say so,”Vera looked directly into his eyes.

She’d seen Myron of course, many times in the past. The day on the steps was their first official introduction after her parents announcing her betrothal. The first time she’d actually met him was when she and her father had ridden into town to…
